Exchange foreign license for Slovenian driving license

change driver's license to slovenian

Do you already have a driver’s license?
Do you want to simply exchange your old driver’s license for new, Slovenian one?

It’s possible!

Let us explain how to do that in the simplest possible way.

Visiting Upravna enota

Get your existing documents ready (passport, driver's license, proof of obtaining driver's license,...) and call / visit Upravna Enota (administrative unit), in Ljubljana that's on Tobačna street 5.
They'll explain the process of getting documents ready and once they say you're cleared you can start picking out a driving school.

Picking out driving school and doing the exam

So you pick out a good driving school, with english speaking instructors (preferably). You sign-up with them.
Then you have 2 possibilites - you can either drive a few hours as a practice, or, you can go straight to the main exam (not recommended).
You sign-up for the exam again on Upravna enota (but only after you signed-up in a driving school in Slovenia).

Alright, so now you’ve done both steps above.

How does it work with the main exam?

Well main exam looks like this – you’ll start the exam on a parking lot on Cesta dveh cesarjev 176.

The evaluator will come and greet you, check the documents and then sit in the back of the car.

They will probably ask you a few simple questions such as, “How do you turn on the headlights?” or “What’s the speed limit on the highway?”.

They might speak Slovenian or English, it’s really up to the evaluator. They’re not required to speak English.

If the evaluator doesn’t wish or doesn’t know how to speak english, your instructor will translate for you as he seats on the passenger seat.

After that you can prepare for the driving and start.

The evaluator will give you instructions (just like instructor did on practical lessons) on where to go and when to turn left / right.

You get evaluated by the end of the exam and the evaluator will also explain their decision.
