How to get Slovenian driving license
In just 7 steps!
Do you already have an existing driving license? Click here to read about how to exchange your current driving license for Slovenian one.
Start here!
The first step is to register for the CPP course. You can do it online and it costs only €69. The course is valid just like the live course, only you can follow it from home.
Before you get behind the wheel, you need a medical certificate. You get this by visiting an authorized doctor and having an examination. You can either contact Medicina Dela or Holmed.
A mandatory stop on the way to the exam is the First Aid course and the First Aid exam. There you learn basic skills that can come in handy in an emergency.
Once you have mastered all the theory from the CPP, the theory exam awaits you. This is actually a quiz where you show you know the rules. You apply at the Administrative Unit.
After successfully passing the theory test, driving lessons follow. You must complete the ride with one of the instructors and accumulate the necessary hours for the main ride.
The last but definitely the most important step is the main drive. Here you show everyone that you are a competent and safe driver, and if you pass it successfully, you get your driving test! You can also register for the main ride through the Administrative Unit.

Getting your Slovenian driving license as a foreigner is quite straightforward.
If you’re living in Slovenia and have a residence permit, you’re allowed to drive with your existing foreign driving license for up to a year.
This means you can drive the same types of vehicles in Slovenia that you’re allowed to drive in your home country.
If your license is from an EU country or from Liechtenstein, Norway, or Iceland, there’s no time limit—you can drive in Slovenia indefinitely. However, if you plan to be a long-term resident of Slovenia, you might consider swapping your existing license for a Slovenian one.
To replace your foreign license with a Slovenian driving license, you’ll need to pass the practical driving test. But here’s the good news: if your license is from certain countries like any EU states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, etc. you won’t have to take the practical test at all – but you should check this with the Upravna enota.
After you replace it, your foreign license will be sent back to the issuing authority in your home country. You can apply for the license replacement at any administrative unit. When applying, make sure to bring:
- Your current driving license (existing one)
- A valid medical certificate (you can get one from Medicina dela or Holmed)
- A 35 x 45 mm photo of you or you can take a photo inside Upravna enota.
- Receipt for the administrative fee (€18.10) and the driving license form fee (€3.27)
- Proof that you were a resident in the country that issued your original driving license, or that you studied there for at least six months.
If you need to take the practical test, you can sign up for it at any driving school near you, such as driving school Tilia.
For more details, you can check the Slovenian Traffic Safety Agency‘s website, although it’s primarily in Slovenian. Alternatively, some information is available on the eUprava.
There you have it! Now you’re well-informed and ready to hit the Slovenian roads. Safe driving!
